Even with near record high temps this weekend, the fly fishing remained very productive which is par for the course this time of year in the Driftless area of SE Minnesota. Cooler water temps (mid 40's to high 40's) trigger Brown trout to spawn and prior to this, both sexes increase their food intake which makes for some incredible fishing! This increase in consumption not only provides the energy needed for the migration to their upstream spawning areas but also has to do with the production of the eggs and sperm for the spawn. This weekend was spectacular with some incredible Browns being caught on dries during the late morning Baetis (Blue Wing Olive) hatch, on Hoppers during early the afternoon and on Streamers during late afternoon into the evening. Truly one of my favorite seasons to fish and you can't beat the scenery either with the bluffs becoming awash in orange, crimson and yellow. Still a few days left in the catch & release season .... so, Carpe Diem - seize the day!
