I (Mel) have been tying flies since i was 9 years old and will teach you how to begin tying your own. the joy of catching a trout on a fly is amplified when it is one you tied yourself. tying flies may not save you money, but it is "productive dreaming" in the anticipation of a fish eating what you created. you can make variations of your own, based on your experience, you can copy others (most flies are these two) or you can invent something all your own. the class will provide all tools, materials and personal instruction to get you started. it is a great hobby to do by yourself, or with others, the process of tying also helps us understand the way the artificial fly is supposed to imitate the trout food it represents, both in look and the way it presents in the water. a micro look at the construction allows us to be better anglers. it is a tradition passed on to me from my grandfather, and I find joy in continuing this tradition and passing it on to my children and grandchildren. join me on Saturday November 22, 2025 to begin a lifelong hobby and your own traditions. Thanks, Mel Hayner-owner the driftless fly fishing co-Preston, MN.
