Cooler temps this weekend along with partly cloudy / overcast skies had the trout turned on to feed and their eyes were looking up. More grasshoppers are present now in the pastures which marks my favorite time to fish the Driftless area - Terrestrial Time! Tough casting in the wind today but that's the time to throw your hopper patterns along the edges as this is when the real insects are blown into the water from overhanging vegetation. The aggressive takes on the surface are a real "rush" and definitely gets the heart rate up! Be sure to "twitch" your fly as this often times is what triggers the strike. For times when the fish are feeding subsurface black BH Wooley Buggers are also putting nice fish in the net. Be sure to stop in at the Driftless Fly Fishing Company fly shop in Preston, MN and stock up on the "hot" patterns for the coming Fall!
