The last few evenings have brought incredible hatches of Caddis and Light Hendricksons which equated to phenomenal dry fly action! The streams are running clear with normal flows so take time this Holiday weekend and hit those SE Minnesota trout streams. Be sure to stop in at the Driftless Fly Fishing Company in Preston, MN and pick up your flies and needed supplies for your outings.
Brian Schumacher After the rain it is cool but creeks are clear and very fishable, The South Branch of The Root River is stained but fishable. Some nice fish are being taken on nymphs and some risers seen and caddis in the air. You have to work for them but that's half the fun. If it was easy everyone would be doing it and then...... we would have to go somewhere else. This one caught on the new Orvis Superfine Carbon Rod 4 wt. We got them in the shop. Test drive it you will like it.
Sometimes it takes a while, but the runoff is now entering the downstream portions of The South Branch of The Root River and it has become chocolate milk. Tribs are still fishable so go upstream to find good fishable water. Good reports of nice fish being taken in upper stretches of The South Fork and feeder creeks.
Despite some rain around us the South Branch of The Root River and Tributaries are running clear and fishable. Weather looks great and should be less pressure due to Walleye opener. That's OK by me. I will chase trout and leave the other fish to someone else. It is going to be a beautiful day for fly fishing the Driftless of Minnesota. Remember Fly Fishing 101 Free Beginner Class starts at 9 AM sharp at SE Minnesota's only local fly shop. Buy local because you can. Come on down. Caddis are hatching, fish are rising and a river runs through it. Living the Dream in The Driftless. Mel
Gorgeous weekend we had here in the Driftless Area of SE Minnesota and we have entered an absolutely wonderful time to be on the water. The woods are coming alive with vibrant green foliage, wildflowers are blooming and the streams are running clear. Several Browns were taken on a variety of flies today .... everything from the mainstays of BM Pheasant tails & BM Hare's Ears to BH Wooley Buggers and early this afternoon I encountered a nice Caddis hatch with several fish taken on dries (Caddis). Be sure to stop in at the Driftless Fly Fishing Company Fly Shop for all your fly fishing needs, get the latest "intel" on what's working, share a cup of coffee with us and perhaps tell a tall tale or two!
