It was a productive morning in the Minnesota Driftless with many fish landed. Temps were nearing 40 degrees by late morning and a nice Midge hatch occurred which caused the fish to begin focusing towards the surface. After having early success with a BH Pheasant Tail nymph it was time to switch to a small midge pattern and several nice Browns couldn't resist its allure. Be sure stop in at the Driftless Fly Fishing Company fly shop in Preston, MN to get the current "hot" flies and what areas are producing.
Fish are more active now with warmer temps. They are taking small, bead head nymphs fast and furious. Mike got a few in a short time in the South Branch of The Root River near the fly shop in Preston
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MINNESOTA, WINTER CATCH AND RELEASE SEASON INCLUDES ALL STREAMS IN SE MINNESOTA. THE BARBLESS HOOK RULE IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT. LOOK FOR WARMER DAYS WHEN THE WATER WARMS. HATCHING MIDGES, NYMPHS AND VERY SMALL FLIES MIGHT DO THE TRICK. GOT MY FIRST 2015 TROUT ON A SIZE 16 PHEASANT TAIL NYMPH RIGHT BY THE SHOP.
